CAULFIELD MISSION STATEMENT
“To inspire the confidence in everybody to live life with authenticity, one stitch at a time”
Following his high school graduation, Holden Caulfield decided to go back to New York with a new outlook on life. No longer a catcher in the rye, Holden has joined the onlookers at the cliff of disillusionment. In New York, Holden wanted everyone to feel the confidence, authenticity, independence, and freedom his red hunting hat brought him. Starting with mending Phoebe’s clothes, and even making her some, Holden chose to create his own fashion brand, Caulfield.
Caufield is a new, up and coming fashion brand, recently dominating the runways in the New York Fashion Week. Holden’s unique designs stole the coveted spotlight during NYFW, promoting the Caulfield brand. Caulfield recently put out its first Fall-Winter Collection, and hopes to release a Spring-Summer collection in the near future. A theme in Catcher in the Rye, is the walls one puts up to not feel vulnerable, this theme is explored through the use of layers, and baggy clothing. Holden Caulfield uses his previous experiences at Pencey Preparatory School, and New York City to inspire the designs of his collection. Holden is taking a dark time in his life, and making art from it, pouring love into each piece seen at the store, in one’s closet, and on the runway. Holden is authentically himself, and that is reflected in the clothes release. The brand, Caulfield hopes to promote authenticity in the world, and to do away with the phoniness. Wearing a Caulfield piece will inspire the wearer to have the confidence to be authentic in everything they do.
Each piece featured in the collection is inspired by either a particular scene, theme, or character in Catcher in the Rye. The brand, Caulfield, is Holden's triumph over his depression, a way of processing his experiences at one of his darkest times. Through Caulfield, Holden is able to make social criticism through his designs, and express himself in a way that is authentic to himself. The Caulfield brand hopes to explore this experience more with each collection. Beginning with familiar clothing, working up to high fashion, and returning to the future, with eyes facing forwards and not backward. Just as each stitch in a Caulfield piece holds meaning, so does every detail in a Caulfield runway. The progression of the collection follows a Hero’s Quest archetype, with the pieces starting off in the world of the ordinary, and haute couture style clothing being the magical world, with the ending resulting in a changed motif in the clothing. The models and soundtrack are equally as important as the clothes, and their performances move the Hero’s Journey from one step to the other.
The goal of the clothing is so that the wearer will feel comfortable with their bodies, the clothing designed ranges from baggy to tight, covered to exposed. However, the wearer feels most comfortable and true to themselves there is an option to them. Experimenting with silhouette play into the mystery behind each design. The aim for each piece is to be gray and authentic, to not care what others have to say as long as it is on your terms. It does not matter as long its works for you.
Caulfield is wearable art, everybody involved in this brand, whether it is wearers, tailors, etc., are all part of this experience. Caulfield is a celebration for moving on in life, and accepting reality, and being happy with it.
