Phoniness in the West
Phoniness comes at the cost of one's character. Just as phoniness cuts away at the character, this shirt has knife shaped tears to mimic the damage phoniness causes. The outfit features western chaps, with the model having a Western hair style. This reflects the West's new style, and new social norms, one of them being phoniness, and the corruption it brings.
-Holden Caulfield
Connection to Catcher in the Rye
DB traded his authenticity in the East for phoniness in the West. Hollywood changed DB in the eyes of Holden. DB no longer wrote short stories for himself, but for money and movies. Using the "Wild West" motif, along with the torn up shirt, this piece suggests a corrupting West from Holden's perspective.
